About

Hi, I am Matthew Hains.

I am a Computer Applications Technology award-winning teacher who began my teaching career in 1998 after completing my studies at the Johannesburg College of Education (now WITS School of Education). I teach Computer Applications Technology - for Grades 10 through 12 - and ICT for Grades 8 and 9. I also run a Tech Club every week at school for students interested in coding, AR, Minecraft, 3D printing and Mobile app development. One of my responsibilities is also the professional ICT development of the staff at my school.

I have been a Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert since 2016 and was also appointed as a Microsoft Innovative Educator Fellow in 2019. I won the ISPA Tech Teacher of the Year award twice and was a MIE representative for South Africa at the Microsoft E2 exchange in Toronto, Canada in 2017.

I am a senior marker for the IEB Grade 12 National Senior Certificate C.A.T. examinations. I am involved in various educational conferences and events as a speaker, round-table discussion chairman or workshop convener each year at various events.

My passion for teaching, especially teaching the subject of Computer Applications Technology, led me to create the Tech Teachers web site and C.A.T. & I.T. Teachers Facebook Group in 2011. Both sites have become very successful for thousands of C.A.T. teachers across South Africa and have shown how online collaboration and community can benefit the profession of teaching.

Other accolades include being a published author of the book "Digital Classroom Resource - Essential Terms and Concepts for CAT and ICT". Published by Cambridge University press in 2019.

In 2021, I completed my Master's Degree in ICT in Education, through the University of Johannesburg.
